1.

Custom decrees that any two people caught in the rare glow of the roselight crystal who are free to do so ought to kiss, as this will bring good fortune to them and their folk. It is a custom of the capital region, and Viren, newly arrived from the western uplands, has never heard of it. The High Mage smiles when she mentions it, and the lesson meanders off on a tangent about her beloved late wife's odd relationship with luck and games of chance. Apprentice mage Viren files the bit of folklore away as foolish sentimentality that could, like any knowledge, prove useful in the right circumstances.

He isn't expecting to be quizzed about it the next evening by the heir to the throne. His Highness Crown Prince Harrow, whom Viren has only met once, in a crowd, asks if he knows what kind of crystal is set in the lamp over one door to the New Year's Ball. Eager to prove himself, he identifies the crystal, describes its structure and uses, and mentions the custom he's just learned.

"... but I'm not certain what's meant by 'free to do so.'"

Harrow shrugs.

"Probably old enough, not in holy orders, and not married?"

"That would depend on the type of marriage or other bond. Different human nations have different traditional family structures, and in ancient Xadia..."

They both end up late to where they're going. And in the following weeks Viren finds himself spending many evenings in the library, helping the prince study, telling stories, or talking through his latest research ideas while Harrow listens.

2.

Harrow is seventeen when he travels to Neolandia, excited and a bit overwhelmed with the new and wondrous sights and sounds and smells and tastes. Viren is with him, a close and familiar companion whose presence helps center and ground him, despite the young mage's frenetic attempts to learn every bit of information about every place they visit and everyone they meet.

Their clothes aren't right for the weather, so it's a welcome relief to eat lunch with Prince Ahling in a shaded, poolside garden. Afterward they wander through a cave filled with the prince's prized pets, rare lucky dthak lizards that draw energy from the fireheart crystals embedded in the walls. The lizards occasionally make croaking/chirping sounds that are faintly musical. It's Neolandian tradition, Ahling tells them, that if you hear one sing six notes, you will find true love within the year. He has many other lizard facts he's proud to share, and Viren listens avidly, while Harrow returns to the pool, pulling off his boots and swishing his toes in the water.

It's no surprise that Viren crashes into bed immediately after dinner and starts snoring soon after. Harrow feels worn out too, but too keyed up to sleep. A huge yellow moon rises over the garden, and the lizard sounds start up again. Some climb out of the cave while the moon is brightest, and he starts counting the notes. He tries to wake Viren, but his companion slumbers on, face aglow with moonbeams, soft and calm and beautiful.

Harrow thinks if he hears the six notes there's no need to wait a year, or a minute; his true love is here. He laughs at his own romantic nonsense. His mother would dismiss it, since that's not how royals ought to think. Viren might dismiss it, too, depending on his mood, but it doesn't matter. Loving Viren is just a part of him, warm and steady in his heart for years now. He brushes Viren's hair back from his forehead, and gently kisses his cheek, before climbing into bed, sleepy at last.

As he's drifting off he hears a dthak lizard singing, six notes in a row.

3.

At Princess Annika's wedding, Viren dances for hours, polishing familiar steps and learning new ones.

Shortly before sunset, the families offer a song and a prayer, and the brides toss their garlands of flowers into the crowd.

If the garlands are caught by lovers, it's an extra blessing for the marriage. So when Viren catches one, and sees Harrow catch the other, he isn't surprised by the kiss, and he plays along.

"It's gracious of you to make a good show for tradition and luck."

Harrow shakes his head with a nervous smile.

"They aimed for us. Because they know how I feel about you."

"How do you feel about me?"

"Please, let me show you..."

He reaches for Viren, and Viren nods and leans in. This kiss, like the other one, is joyful and sweet, but it's also tender, and passionate, filled with pent-up longing and a hint of future dreams.

Then Harrow asks, "How do you feel about me?"

Viren tells him, "I'd do anything for you!"

Harrow smiles. "I know. But I'm your prince, and that's your duty, so-"

Viren stops him.

"I'll always serve the crown, of course, but you... It's not your crown or your title that makes me want to follow you anywhere..."

Harrow pulls him close.

"...face any challenge, risk any danger..."

He trails off as Harrow claims his lips decisively. Annika flashes a satisfied smirk in their direction as the brides make their way to their private chamber.

There's more dancing, and this time prince and mage move together, close and slow in the torchlight, murmuring truths and promises, in between kisses, long into the night.

Roles

V & H get parts in HS play as legendary divine heroic brothers

Lujanne, who's the college student director, is emphatic that "They have a platonic relationship! A brotherly bond! No one should try out for these roles if there's a chance they have unresolved sexual tension!"

They start running lines together. Nerd Viren keeps interjecting facts about the source material.

"This is just one version of the myth. Sometimes they're lovers."

"And brothers,too?"

"Well, technically, I guess, since they were the only two beings in the universe for aeons. Brothers and enemies and friends and lovers and enemies again and comrades in arms... Gods can be like that. There's no one true version..."

"I can't do this. Ever since you said that thing about how they were lovers I've been thinking about it, and about us playing the roles, but that's wrong because you're like my brother..."

"Whoa, Harrow... I have never once thought of you as a brother."

"...never?"

Viren shakes his head.

"But... after your parents died, when you were living with us... You'd come to my bed when you had nightmares. I'd hug you til you fell asleep. And when I was hurting you'd tell me stories to distract me..."

Viren pats his arm and squeezes gently.

"Yeah. It's not like I've forgotten. I love you, in a way that goes beyond any other friendship I can imagine. But not in a way that prevents me from appreciating how mind-meltingly hot you are lately."

He blushes he says it, and looks at the script lying on the floor between them.

Harrow grins at him, feeling himself flush, feels warmth grow in his chest and spread out through his body. He moves the script and slides across the carpet so they're touching.

"I guess I have caught you staring at me sometimes, but I didn't want to assume... Mind-meltingly hot?"

"Yeah, well, half the school thinks so, too. But I've seen you shirtless, so I win."

"Hmmm... I've seen you shirtless, so I win, too."

Harrow undoes the top three buttons of his shirt. He does it slowly, in an exaggerated pantomime of stripping, thinking he's being ridiculous and Viren will laugh and this will be less intense, but Viren just stares, his expression between "dreamy" and "worshipful." (Maybe he should have added sound effects.)

Intense is alright. It's Harrow's heart hammering in his chest as he leans to meld their lips together for the first time.

And then for the second time, as Viren grips his shirt and pulls him in again. This time their lips part. This time they taste.

When the kiss ends, Viren sighs happily and leans his forehead against Harrow's. Noses brush cheeks. Eyelashes tickle. Breath mingles.

They might want to do this all afternoon. And maybe in most of their free time for the next month. They might look forward to doing more... eventually...

They might not be right for these parts, after all.

"The writing team might be willing to tweak the script. There are many variations on these myths..." *wink*

Years of passion and conflict and loss separate them from two boys, inseperable and bursting with dreams, but Lord Viren thinks that memory could be his best chance.

"I think of you... as... a brother."

King Harrow glowers at him.

"You don't mean that."

Frustrated and desperate, Viren demands, "If I'm offering to die for you, why does it matter exactly how I-"

The rest of his words are lost against Harrow's lips.

As Viren told his own story, he watched her face, stopping when he noted Delfina's great displeasure and concern.

"He treated you cruelly, but you... you burned everything! I'm not willing to make a home and a family with someone I'm afraid of, not again!"

Viren sighed.

"I don't know, then, if I can be what you need. But if you'd consider it, magic could offer some options..."

V: It's for the greater good.

H: We got married for a reason, too!
V: You're making this harder.

If I learn how to draw I will make comics of magefam feelz but now I just have words...

"Why would dad put persimmon syrup on his pancakes? Doesn't he hate that?"
"I hate it too, Soren. It's gross."
"Mom really loves it, though. She uses like half the bottle at once."

for Oracleverse:

"Is this the table where you sit if the love of your life is getting married?"

Viren recognized the woman in the robes of a priestess. She was always at the side of the future queen, fixing her hair, massaging her back, and holding her young son during the crown fitting. She had a goblet in one hand and a bottle in the other.

He waved his empty goblet at her. "I suppose it is, but there's a tax."

She poured them both drinks, sat down, drained hers, and immediately filled it again.

"This one time, at mage school..."

Viren cleared his throat awkwardly.

"I'm as bored as you are. If you want to experiment, I'd be willing to assist, in the name of boredom and the eternal quest for knowledge."

"Oh. Thanks for the offer.  I'll let you know if I get that lonely."

and the next part, "Reminder"

"It's a special research project."

Harrow frowned, skeptical.

"Special how? Foolish? Risky? Forbidden? Cursed?"

Moar medievalish AUs:

Gren/Viren:

"Physiological Effects"

The rush of heat and loss of focus was sudden.  Viren pushed another slice of fruit against Gren's lips.  Gren chewed it, wondering why it was important, but then he realized; it was equalizing the dose, to make sure they were similarly affected.

Viren grimaced.  "It was foolish not to suspect physiological effects." He gestured at the door, strengthening the spells to keep it locked and the room silenced.

Virrow:

Harrow looked at him in with mild surprise. "You've only had jelly tarts twice? In your whole life? That's a travesty!" He clasped Viren's shoulder. "You can definitely have some if we lose, too."

"Incognito" (or something like that):

As the bright, swirling powder dissipated, Harrow recognized his friend. Viren apologized about the spell.  Then, with a puzzled frown, he asked, "Were you really going to ask a stranger to dance... because he looked like me? Do you do this all the time?"

"I don't make a habit of it, no."

Quest aftermath thing:

"I would gag you, if anyone would be here to listen to your provocative nonsense!"
"What?  Where are you going?"
"To perform my princely duties.  I didn't know you would arrive today.  Just one of many things you've kept from me."

The question was raised on Twitter about ships for The Dragon Prince and I started to reply to but realized it was turning into a whole post, so...

I fell hard in the first freaking episode for the ships that have been dearest to me ever since, but also for like... all the characters, especially the adults... (Kinda vaguely in order of how much I care...)

Varrai (Sarai/Harrow/Viren) is best ship & form of government, my mind will not be changed.  Pls to bring me all the Everyone LIves AUs with a side of Happy Power OT3 Parents.  The show keeps underlining the importance of their relationship by showing how messed up and out of balance everything is with one gone, talking about the three tools of justice correlated with their problem-solving perspectives, etc. I'm ok with lots of variations... Like maybe they aren't all together all the time or exclusively or the actual romance and/or sex bit is more of King Harrow Timeshare Agreement, or the marriage is largely for formality /convenience / An Oracle Did It... But they have to all like & respect each other & be important.

Virrow (Harrow/Viren) = hot dads basically canon in most of the ways I really care about.  Definitively The Most Important People In Each Other's Lives WIth The Painting To Prove It.  We could have had husbands and that's sad.  We also could have had like, friends to lovers to friendly exes to frenemies who play chess & try to undermine each other's war strategies / struggles to control the fate of the human kingdoms.

I was already in deep by the time it was clear just how much angst / heart sporking this ship canonically brings.  I like making fluffy AUs cuz they deserve to be happy.  There will always be tension, an edge, arguing... but that can be pretty fluffy when you're not dealing with stuff like assassination attempts. Some of my fav flavors include
- No significant hurt, just dad stuff and pancakes and sometimes breakups cuz Sarai Always Lives
- Hurt with lots & lots of comfort
- They hurt each other & enjoy it, with special subcategory Harrow Admits Dark Magic Is Useful & Also Hot

Viren/Mystery Parent - It seemed like forever til their was any information about the brodigies other parent(s), and I really wanted to fill that space with OCs.  And I wrote stuff and didn't post it, woe, but I guess I still will? If I'm fitting it with another main ship then I'm trying to minimize angst, and IMO Lord Pragmatism & Creative Solutions would totally be up for all kinds of arrangements / experiments / not listening to His Royal Boringness give advice about the proper way to make a family.  Then also there's the thing of, you can have an OC or Mystery Mom and go all in with the romance / smut / love story / etc., but that person is going to have to accept that they will never be first in his heart and life and reasons for sacrifice.  Maybe tied?  Maybe the king and the kids are tied and they're like, right next?

Sarai/Opeli - I Just Think They're Neat and I should really post some fic I guess.

Sarai/Lady Justice - It's canon and great

Sarai/any woman character - & also especially the one lady in the council who's maybe the head of the Crown Guard or not & hopefully didn't die & I'm calling her Panya

Sarai/domming the hell out of everyone

Sarai/Viren's ex - I'm realizing there's a lot of ways to do this & I've only really thought about like 1.5 of them...

Anyone/everyone/Viren - bring it plz thx, but I mostly prefer humans and formed my opinions in S1... have done Gren/Viren & prob will again...

Viren/Marcos - I might have gotten a lot out of the scout report scene & been encouraged...

Corvus/Gren - I was confused for a while & thought they were closer in age, but I still like this ship a lot.  Canonical reasons to think they have spent a bunch of time together & developed trust...

Corvus/anyone/everyone

Janaya - I really super like friends to lovers but enemies to lovers can be real good too I want to see them interact more and more Janai everything

Annika/Neha/doing stuff and not dying

Rayla/Marcos - IDK I'm a sucker for life debts and culture shock and they're cute

Marcos/Soren - they can be cute sweet gay & possibly trans jocks together, shy in different ways & foolish in different ways

Raylium?  Raydium?  Whatever the Claudia/Rayla/Callum ship is called.  I like OT3s and Claudia should have everything and everyone she wants and I believe she can save the world.

Tink/Runaan and also Tink/Runaan/Rayla's parents

Lujanne/some husbands or spouses
Lujanne/a bunch of the guests at your wedding where she is catering with versatile, creative protein sources
Lujanne/fun with with magic
Lujanne can freak my bean anytime, is what I'm getting at here...

Are there any ships I really don't like?  I don't really think of any.  They made everyone hot and mostly interesting and I feel like almost everyone who interacts has at least some chemistry.  I don't really think about shipping the kids, but yes if you write Future Ellis / Future Aanya I will read it.

Viravos and to a certain extent Rayllum are things I try to avoid cuz I'm not interested and they. are. everywhere!!! and especially like so many Virrow & Viren fan persons sailed away with the sparkly elf and I just... I am happy for them but I just. don't. get it. and it's like it takes energy to deal with that?  IDK.  It's like Bagginshield or Thorki ealier in my fandom experience, but now I write fic sometimes, so in addition to sifting thru content to find stuff that's... not that... I'm also, like, berating myself for not making more and better content.

lonespark: Cassidy from "Far Beyond the Stars" (Default)
Fic I've shared, mostly on the Team Viren Discord, but not put up at AO3, yet

Most of it, or is supposed to eventually be, part of longer things

A lot of this is NSFW, but not all, and I tried to age-restrict the posts properly

Includes instances of cis author trying not to fuck up trans characters

Feedback is a gift

Contains mild, vague spoilers for Into The Spiderverse

I mentioned one of my fav ship types:

Ruler/Leader and childhood/longtime Friend/Companion who's always by their side, will defend them to the death/pain/afterlife/etc.

A wonderful variation on that is where the Companion is some kind of monster, magical, alien, not constrained by things like "physics" or "ethical concerns"...

fichuntie wrote Virrow fic that, like, strokes this button for me:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/17126294

Garak/Bashir can hit this nicely. I should dig up some of my fav fics. Julian wasn't particularly a leader in the show, but it's definitely something he could grow into.

Charles & Eric can do this, too...

Man, Roku & Sozin coulda had this!

Marvel!Thor and Loki can have it, too. I don't ship them, but you can do it with other kinds of love. Also ages ago on norsekink I prompted this and someone started writing it as Loki/Rhodey, which was AMAZING, but I don't think it got continued...

It's fine if they take turns being the monster.

Itempas/Nahadoth from Jemisin's Inheritence Trilogy hit this really well. You can do it in an OT3 too... I guess Shahar Arameri / Itempas works too? The whole series does amazing stuff with power and responsibility and love and lust and devotion and aaaaaaaaaaaaa like enslaved gods and tattoos with magical world-altering power and and and

OMFG I almost forgot the most amazing potential for this in The Killing Moon with Reapers, or even just devoted pet Gatherers. *Pours one out for Ehiru* *Vows to reread*

Riv and Isaac in the Mangoverse by Shira Glassman sort of fit, taking turns I guess? He's a literal monster with the dragon-shifting (and snakes? I should reread...), she's a mercenary in the first book and general hardcore warrior.

SG called Isaac a "snarky wizard DILF" in a tweet so of course that made me think of Viren...

Djinn can be all about this trope! Variations on coercion vs. partnership...
Must... find... American Gods... fic...

I want to think of more examples with woman characters. My shiny new ship from Into the Spiderverse might work... ("Oh great, it's my ex-girlfriend the evil genius with tentacles")

I was never really in VLD fandom, but if you shipped Allura with one (or several... or all...) of Lotor's generals you could have an amazing version of this!

I should go see what's in the Wonder Woman tag on AO3, Amazons got this...

I like it ok with het ships as long as the woman is in charge. A shadow side* AU Galadriel/Celeborn could be this. Hell, Melian/Thingol and Luthien/Beren kind of canonically are this? Arwen/Aragorn could be too...

Persephone & Hades got this going on sometimes. I should find that comic where he's like, "Kick his ass babe, I'll hold your flower."

I really, really, really wanted Ella & Frederick in the Hero's Guide series to grow into this. I also ship her with Rapunzel and that could have been such a nice OT3. If someone got with Briar Rose they could have this, too.

Shades of this in the...3rd book, was it? with the witch and the barbarian, non-romantic... Doing this while sharing a body is interesting... (frantic scribbling about soulfang serpents...)

*Is "shadow side" a better way of saying "dark" for AUs and stuff? It's a little awkward, but it's the best thing I can think of, reminds me of magic and shadow work but where does that come from? is it too close to "dark" to be ok? What are some alternatives that make sense?

The last name on the list of prospective candidates for possible consideration of conceivably opening negotiations for courting was Captain Sarai of the Standing Battalion. Although soldiers were known for strong language in certain circumstances, it was still a great surprise when the first words to leave the lady's lips were, "Fucking shit, it's Scholar Boy and Sexy Muscles!"

"Why?!?" Captain Sarai was shouting, and both King Harrow and his High Mage were staring at her, baffled and slightly alarmed. "Why is this my life?!? And my sister... Amaya knew! She knew and she didn't tell me for, like, ten fucking years! I'm going to make her pay for this..."

"Viren," the king hissed, "What is she talking about?"

"I think I have some idea. Do you remember your twenty-first birthday?"

"Not clearly... I do seem to recall a certain someone instructing me to have the whole unpleasant affair stricken from the record and banned from discussion."

Now Sarai was beginning to look distraught.

"It's alright," Viren assured her. "You acquited yourself well, and like many youthful missteps, it has served as a learning experience."

"I don't really know the details on your side, but in general I assume you are entitled to be a dumbass on your birthday. I think it's a law."

"Hmmm. Something to formalize by royal decree perhaps?"

AU ficlet for The Dragon Prince
low-key VIrrow

On his return Viren brings the serpent, but leaves it in its basket by the door, hoping not to antagonize Harrow further.  He's already thinking this won't work, and he needs alternate plans, but it's almost certainly too late. His daughter's brilliance will fail, his valiant son may fall, untold soldier's lives lost, and for what?

Even speaking with Harrow doesn't go as planned.  They couldn't have done worse if they'd meant to. But there's a certain fitting clarity in his current position.

"You're right," he says, kneeling, drawing ragged breaths, "My place is here."  There's a calm descending on him, dampening the flaring anger at the stupidity of loss.

Harrow says nothing for minutes, just breathing, gasping in air like he's drowning.  Eventually he speaks, almost a whisper.

"Thank you."  He sinks down again onto the ornate chair with a groan.

Viren glances up at him, shuffles forward.  "It's not hubris for a High Mage to sometimes stand beside the throne,  rather than before it. Crown and staff both rule and serve, since ancient days.  That is the High Mage's place. But my place is here.” He looks back down at the stone floor. “My spirit is yours to command."

He has been inching forward til he is again at Harrow's feet.  The king reaches out and grasps his shoulder. Viren looks up, meeting Harrow’s eyes.

"And your heart?"

"Forever."  The barest or whispers.  Feeling completely drained, he sighs and gently leans his forehead against the king's armored knee.  Fingertips begin stroking his hairline. His eyes are wet.

"To lose you when I might have saved you…” He swallows around the lump in his throat. “That would destroy me."

Harrow shakes his head.  He reaches out to pull his mage up with him as he stands, then starts pacing the room.  Viren leans on his staff, his knee still smarting from leaning on it so long, and watches.

"I could face this if Sarai were here."

Viren huffs and throws his arm out. "Harrow, she would want you to fight!  You know that."

"She'd accept any decision I needed to make.  But..” The king stops pacing and gives his mage a small nod.  “ You're right, she'd help me find the heart to fight."

Viren comes to stand in front of him, the clink of his staff on the stone the only other sound besides Pip’s quiet chatter.

"Harrow, please, think of your boys,” he pleads. “The crown may have sins to atone for, but the king has children who need him."

Sarai would have made that argument better, too.

                                                              ____

The end is coming.  The shadows creep silently up the steps, and death within them.

King and mage stand shoulder to shoulder, staring at the heavy chamber door.  The sound of armored bodies crumpling to the stone floor just outside is the only noise to be heard.  Even Pip has gone still. No shouting, no weapons being drawn. Just quiet death.

Harrow swallows.  "What ideas did you have besides that snake?"

"It was Claudia's idea, actually." A small strained smile from her father.

"She's a very clever girl.” Harrow peers at his mage out of the corner of his eye. “My answer is still no."

"There's only one other thing I'm able to do.” Viren pauses. “It is dark magic”

"Obviously."

"Not only that.  It's horrific.” The muffled sounds outside the bedchamber’s door have stopped.  “You will feel tainted by having witnessed it. You will...hate me, and want me dead."

Harrow frowns, straightening his back.

"I’ve seen you do a great many things with your dark magic. Viren, please, my children… I can’t not -”

"You will! …I will pay that price, if not gladly..."

He reaches out to take Harrow's hand.  Harrow swallows as the mage presses his lips to his knuckles.  When Viren straightens, their eyes meet.

“Viren -” Harrow starts to speak but quiets when Viren squeezes his hand.

“Forever, as I said, my king.”

He releases the king’s hand with a small smile and turns back to the door, readying his staff.

Death breaches the door.

                                                                         ___

Even without the smashed-in door, they can tell the elves are there; they just can’t quite see them.

Viren gives no them time to begin their attack.  The purple jewel in his staff begins to glow, warping and disturbing the air and light around them.  The elves begin to scream.

Harrow jumps back, terrified, as he watches tendrils of energy lash at barely-perceptible forms, utterly merciless in their destruction.  The elves' souls are ripped loose from their bodies, flayed and torn asunder. Bodies finally become visible just to crumble into choking dust.  Unearthly wails echo through the castle and far into the night beyond.

Viren's eyes, both dark and too brightly lit, pierce through Harrow and he shudders.  He looks like a monster from the worst of nightmares, eldritch and inescapable. Still, when the energy drains away and he sways, Harrow catches him, easing Viren's body to the floor.

He stares into the face of his beloved mage.  What stares back isn't Viren. Harrow prays that's temporary.

There's commotion in the hallway.  Soren and Claudia, followed by Callum, shouting,

"Dad!"
