Once Upon a Time in Katolis

lonesparkOnce upon a time in the kingdom of Katolis, a prince was born. There was some initial confusion with people thinking he was a princess, but it was straightened out before too long.
Once upon a time the prince grew older, and stronger, and closer to a tall, pale boy who was going to be the greatest mage in centuries. That was just one of the things he talked about at great length. Other topics included magic, known species of Xadian birds, history, magic, geography, the relative stupidity of various traditional practices, magic...
They were as close as friends could be, but was friendship the only bond they could share? During the festivities following his 18th birthday, Prince Harrow decided to find out. They were sitting on a bench on the balcony outside his bedchamber, eating pastries and trying to decide how much they liked drinking honey wine.
"Viren, you like boys, right?" Viren nodded. What about me?"
"I love you. You're my dearest friend, closer than..."
"I mean, could you like me 'like that'?"
"Would you like it if I did?"
"I think I would...yes. But last week you said romantic entanglement was a trivial pleasure-"
"- compared with my devotion to the country. And my devotion to you."
"Ohhh..."
They got a lot of practice kissing. And touching in a hundred different ways, from scorching to silly, but always sweet and treasured.
Prince Harrow was always either decisive, or decisively undecided... except about this. His every action demonstrated delighted tentative enthusiasm. Viren the mage apprentice had minimal practical experience, but a wealth of knowledge acquired through intensive research, and a talent for pragmatic experimentation.
They lived as happily as they could until further adventures led to still greater happiness.
