What if kinda vaguely like The Martian but varrai & so far none of the fun parts?

CN: grief, funeral

"There's no goddamn way this should have fucking happened! There were safety factors within safety factors! There are plenty of risks, but this one should be fucking impossible!"

Sarai nods.

"I know."

She feels numb, like thoughts arrive slowly after breaching a protective barrier, but she does understand. Viren doesn't have to keep yelling.

"We need to learn a lot more about surface weather conditions, and fast! We have to redesign the suits, and the protocols, immediately, so this can never, ever happen! I hate making pitches and calls but this is earthshatteringly important so..."

"Those are good ideas," Sarai tells him, "But they don't all have to happen today. They probably can't. We can take some time to be sad."

Viren just growls, "Fuck you!" and leaves. She doesn't see him again til the funeral.

***

Sarai is still numb.

She was drinking, but it didn't seem to help, so she stopped.

Viren, of course, doesn't do numb. He only does distracted, or plummeting into the abyss. She watches him try unsuccessfully to stave off the second option with an alarming volume of alcohol until the bar closes. Then she invites him to keep doing it with tolerable wine on her couch.

Because he shouldn't be alone, and because she doesn't want to be, and everyone else at the funeral knew Harrow and loved him, but it's not the same.

They dated pretty seriously before they started working together and decided to to put that on hold. But Viren has always been an immutable touchstone in Harrow's life. Not just the emergency contact and next of kin, although he is that. A guiding light and a place to land, if not always a soft one. Another vital part of their perfectly imperfect love.

She has shared a lot with Viren over the years. Now they get to add tears, and snot, and this all-consuming pain. It feels like the grief shattered her soul, and came back to grind it to dust.

Yet some persistent, unimportant parts remain... and one of them hopes Viren isn't going to throw up on her very nice and expensive funeral pants. At this point he's mostly just crying in her lap, but sometimes he chokes out words.

"We can't... can't even bring him home!"

"Yeah. That sucks!" She smacks the table and topples her mostly-empty wineglass. It fucking hurts. "But... well... First corpse on a new planet? You know he would think that's kind of cool."

Viren's eyes widen. He wipes his eyes and sits up.

"That is cool! That's really cool." He reaches out and they hug like they'll never let go. "We'll make it mean something."
lonespark: Cassidy from "Far Beyond the Stars" (Default)
Viren kept everything he could think of: breath, blood, hair... even a trivial volume of tears. He couldn't take bone without raising suspicion, and by now it most likely meant nothing. Yet Viren persisted, refusing to succumb to frustration and despair.

The spell should have worked! He should have been able to tether the queen's soul, to feed it with his own life force, and to grant her the chance to return to inhabiting a body. All the time and energy he had to spare after casting the titan's heart spell had gone into searching for ways to strengthen the connection that should have been made. Yet his efforts had seemingly failed, and time was running out.

Viren slumped on his workbench, surrendering to sleep reluctantly in the wee hours once again. He awoke to the feeling of icy mist on his face and neck. An echoing suggestion of a voice said, "You do look sweet when you're sleeping, but this mess is all your fault!"

Viren sat up quickly, striking his head on a shelf. In the darkness of the room, he could make out a shimmering apparition bearing the likeness of queen Sarai.

"I never gave you permission, you know. Discussing a possibility isn't the same as agreeing to try it. But since it's done, I want to talk to my husband."

Viren felt sick. Harrow would never forgive him for meddling with hope and grief, and life and death, especially without the queens' consent. Hopefully, this was just another dream.

"Dammit, Viren, don't be a coward! If you won't do it willingly, I'll find a way to make you!"

Sarai's voice sounded different now, like it was vibrating inside his own head. Suddenly Viren's own right hand smacked him in the forehead.

"Ohh... this is... interesting..." Sarai sounded grimly amused. "I'm new at this, so if I try making you walk, you'll probably fall, or smash into things..."

Taking the hint, Viren made his way to the king's chamber.

***

Harrow was as incredulous, confused, angry, sad, and resentful as Viren had imagined. But after he had interrogated the mage and demanded more research and answers, he turned all his attention to the ghostly form of his beloved wife.

Viren's physical presence was needed, but he was able to wait by the door, beyond the reach of their private words. Harrow called him back to say goodbye as Sarai was fading from sight.

"She thinks she'll be back, but..." Sorrow made the king's voice break. "...she isn't... certain..." Viren nodded gravely.

"Thank you, Viren," Harrow whispered, pulling him into an embrace. "Thank you for giving us this."

***

"I want to touch him."

This time, when Sarai's sudden presence startled him, Viren dropped a jar of moth antennae, which was luckily enspelled not to break.

"I think it would work. I've tried it while you were sleeping."

"Tried what while I was sleeping?!?"

"Touching things. With your hands." He must have looked scandalized or suspicious, because she quickly added, "Harmless things! Like your blanket... and your hair. It feels so good!" She turned a piercing gaze on him. "Don't you dare take that for granted while you have it!"

Viren looked away, trembling.

"I'll do my best, Your Majesty."

Her expression softened.

"I don't think the dead need titles."

"I'll do my best, Sarai, I promise."

Three vines grow up between the statues, in the Valley of Graves.

Sometimes the king's children wander. Sometimes they beg for stories.

The three vines spread and twist, around the statues and each other. Two of them bear flowers in red and gold.

"What about this one?" the eldest asks, pointing to the vine with purple flowers, streaked with midnight black. "Why are the thorns so big and sharp?"

The High Mage is ancient, and fearsome, and wise. When she answers, it's wistful, and bitter, and fond.

"Oh," she says, "If you knew him, you'd understand."

The question was raised on Twitter about ships for The Dragon Prince and I started to reply to but realized it was turning into a whole post, so...

I fell hard in the first freaking episode for the ships that have been dearest to me ever since, but also for like... all the characters, especially the adults... (Kinda vaguely in order of how much I care...)

Varrai (Sarai/Harrow/Viren) is best ship & form of government, my mind will not be changed.  Pls to bring me all the Everyone LIves AUs with a side of Happy Power OT3 Parents.  The show keeps underlining the importance of their relationship by showing how messed up and out of balance everything is with one gone, talking about the three tools of justice correlated with their problem-solving perspectives, etc. I'm ok with lots of variations... Like maybe they aren't all together all the time or exclusively or the actual romance and/or sex bit is more of King Harrow Timeshare Agreement, or the marriage is largely for formality /convenience / An Oracle Did It... But they have to all like & respect each other & be important.

Virrow (Harrow/Viren) = hot dads basically canon in most of the ways I really care about.  Definitively The Most Important People In Each Other's Lives WIth The Painting To Prove It.  We could have had husbands and that's sad.  We also could have had like, friends to lovers to friendly exes to frenemies who play chess & try to undermine each other's war strategies / struggles to control the fate of the human kingdoms.

I was already in deep by the time it was clear just how much angst / heart sporking this ship canonically brings.  I like making fluffy AUs cuz they deserve to be happy.  There will always be tension, an edge, arguing... but that can be pretty fluffy when you're not dealing with stuff like assassination attempts. Some of my fav flavors include
- No significant hurt, just dad stuff and pancakes and sometimes breakups cuz Sarai Always Lives
- Hurt with lots & lots of comfort
- They hurt each other & enjoy it, with special subcategory Harrow Admits Dark Magic Is Useful & Also Hot

Viren/Mystery Parent - It seemed like forever til their was any information about the brodigies other parent(s), and I really wanted to fill that space with OCs.  And I wrote stuff and didn't post it, woe, but I guess I still will? If I'm fitting it with another main ship then I'm trying to minimize angst, and IMO Lord Pragmatism & Creative Solutions would totally be up for all kinds of arrangements / experiments / not listening to His Royal Boringness give advice about the proper way to make a family.  Then also there's the thing of, you can have an OC or Mystery Mom and go all in with the romance / smut / love story / etc., but that person is going to have to accept that they will never be first in his heart and life and reasons for sacrifice.  Maybe tied?  Maybe the king and the kids are tied and they're like, right next?

Sarai/Opeli - I Just Think They're Neat and I should really post some fic I guess.

Sarai/Lady Justice - It's canon and great

Sarai/any woman character - & also especially the one lady in the council who's maybe the head of the Crown Guard or not & hopefully didn't die & I'm calling her Panya

Sarai/domming the hell out of everyone

Sarai/Viren's ex - I'm realizing there's a lot of ways to do this & I've only really thought about like 1.5 of them...

Anyone/everyone/Viren - bring it plz thx, but I mostly prefer humans and formed my opinions in S1... have done Gren/Viren & prob will again...

Viren/Marcos - I might have gotten a lot out of the scout report scene & been encouraged...

Corvus/Gren - I was confused for a while & thought they were closer in age, but I still like this ship a lot.  Canonical reasons to think they have spent a bunch of time together & developed trust...

Corvus/anyone/everyone

Janaya - I really super like friends to lovers but enemies to lovers can be real good too I want to see them interact more and more Janai everything

Annika/Neha/doing stuff and not dying

Rayla/Marcos - IDK I'm a sucker for life debts and culture shock and they're cute

Marcos/Soren - they can be cute sweet gay & possibly trans jocks together, shy in different ways & foolish in different ways

Raylium?  Raydium?  Whatever the Claudia/Rayla/Callum ship is called.  I like OT3s and Claudia should have everything and everyone she wants and I believe she can save the world.

Tink/Runaan and also Tink/Runaan/Rayla's parents

Lujanne/some husbands or spouses
Lujanne/a bunch of the guests at your wedding where she is catering with versatile, creative protein sources
Lujanne/fun with with magic
Lujanne can freak my bean anytime, is what I'm getting at here...

Are there any ships I really don't like?  I don't really think of any.  They made everyone hot and mostly interesting and I feel like almost everyone who interacts has at least some chemistry.  I don't really think about shipping the kids, but yes if you write Future Ellis / Future Aanya I will read it.

Viravos and to a certain extent Rayllum are things I try to avoid cuz I'm not interested and they. are. everywhere!!! and especially like so many Virrow & Viren fan persons sailed away with the sparkly elf and I just... I am happy for them but I just. don't. get it. and it's like it takes energy to deal with that?  IDK.  It's like Bagginshield or Thorki ealier in my fandom experience, but now I write fic sometimes, so in addition to sifting thru content to find stuff that's... not that... I'm also, like, berating myself for not making more and better content.

The last name on the list of prospective candidates for possible consideration of conceivably opening negotiations for courting was Captain Sarai of the Standing Battalion. Although soldiers were known for strong language in certain circumstances, it was still a great surprise when the first words to leave the lady's lips were, "Fucking shit, it's Scholar Boy and Sexy Muscles!"

"Why?!?" Captain Sarai was shouting, and both King Harrow and his High Mage were staring at her, baffled and slightly alarmed. "Why is this my life?!? And my sister... Amaya knew! She knew and she didn't tell me for, like, ten fucking years! I'm going to make her pay for this..."

"Viren," the king hissed, "What is she talking about?"

"I think I have some idea. Do you remember your twenty-first birthday?"

"Not clearly... I do seem to recall a certain someone instructing me to have the whole unpleasant affair stricken from the record and banned from discussion."

Now Sarai was beginning to look distraught.

"It's alright," Viren assured her. "You acquited yourself well, and like many youthful missteps, it has served as a learning experience."

"I don't really know the details on your side, but in general I assume you are entitled to be a dumbass on your birthday. I think it's a law."

"Hmmm. Something to formalize by royal decree perhaps?"
lonespark: Cassidy from "Far Beyond the Stars" (Default)
It had been five months since the royal wedding. The time had flown by in some ways, yet dragged in others. There was so much to do, and so many changes to adjust to, especially for the new queen. Viren had seen little of her since the wedding evening. When he did catch a glimpse she seemed intensely preoccupied, but happy.

Now King Harrow was away, meeting with village leaders in the northwest about potential investment in large-scale irrigation projects. Viren expected correspondence eventually about his proposed new well-drilling techniques, but was content to not have to make the arduous journey this time.

On a later evening of the king's absence, Viren was summoned to the queen's chamber. Sarai embraced him warmly when he arrived. He returned the hug and matched her tired smile. She stood barefoot in a loose robe. He couldn't recall seeing her so undressed, and while it lent her a certain vulnerability, her confidence and strength were still preeminent.

"Viren, it's good to see you. We're supposed to be holding this place together in His Majesty's absence, but we've barely crossed paths the whole time. You're like a very efficient ghost. Do you always lurk in dark corners when you're in the castle?"

He ducked his head, blushing slightly.
"I beg your pardon. I am ever at your beck and call. You need only to summon me. Harrow certainly does on the slightest whim, so I might have forgotten that some people would hesitate."

She laughed at that.
"Everything is new to me, and a bit confusing until I learn the new set of rules. I finally decided writing you was familiar and appropriate."

"Of course, my queen."

"You can still call me Sarai. Please."

"As you wish."

She reached out, took his hand, and led him to sit beside her on the bed. Everything seemed both good and familiar and new and strange. Her thumb stroked the back of his hand as she turned to him and looked him in the face.

"Viren, I have a... proposal. A re-opening of negotiations, if you will. Not as queen. Only as Sarai."

She slid to the floor, to kneel in front of him, graceful, decisive, and awkward all at once, still holding his hand.

"I'd like to kiss you." She tapped the back of his hand.
"Viren, may I kiss you, here?"

There was a long moment where he felt like the world tilted to settle the past in its proper place on the road to this moment. He looked at her, taking in her posture, the gentle hopefulness in her face, and finally looked deep into her eyes, swallowing down the intensity of his emotions.

"Yes."

She slowly bent her head, placed a kiss behind his knuckles, and sighed, letting out twlelve years of breath.

He'd dropped his hand to the bed. She turned it over, tapped the pulse point in his wrist.

"Viren, may I kiss you here?"

"Yes."

This time the warm touch of her lips felt like a blossom of tingling heat and summoned the rushing of blood in his ears.

He was holding his hand in a loose fist. She gently uncurled his fingers, then tapped each one in turn, close to where they met his palm.

"Viren, may I kiss you here?"

"Yes."

"Here?"

"Yes."

Finally the center of his palm, and that felt... indescribably good, as though all the sensation in his body had centered there, where he touched and held so much and now felt connected to such love and promise through the sweet wet warmth and light suction of her kiss.

She repeated the process with his other hand, dropping the verbal exchange in favor of tapping each place and waiting for his nod.

Viren's world was spinning slightly, and breathing had become a challenge in the best of ways. He lay back on the bed. Sarai smiled at him fondly and moved to recline beside him. She lifted her left hand to his hair.

"Viren, may I touch you here?"

"Yes"

"May I kiss you?"

"Yes." She reverently kissed his forehead, then slid her hand to his collar and sat up.

"May I attempt to get you out of these excellent yet somewhat concealing garments?"

"Yes. Let me know if you want help."

He hadn't worn the cape to this less-formal meeting. She deftly disengaged the clasps of his vest and overshirt and he moved to help her slide them off over his arms. She draped them around the bedpost in the far corner more haphazardly than he would have, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

Sarai's fingers hovered at his neck.

"Viren, may I touch you here?"

"Yes."

The touch of her fingertips was light, but not teasing, as they caressed the side of his neck, pushing aside his shirt, ghosting over collarbones and the hollow of his throat. She opened her mouth to say something, then cocked her head and turned toward the door.

"Good evening, your Majesty. How long have you been standing there?"

"A few minutes. A wonderful use of my time. You are both so beautiful."

"Viren, is he invited?"

"Of course."

"I'm happy to sit right here for the moment."

Harrow seated himself in the chair near the bed, beaming at the two of them. The joy that bubbled up in Viren's chest threatened to overwhelm his conciousness. He was grounded some a moment later by Sarai squeezing his hand.

Again she reached out, nearly touching his chest.

"May I kiss you here?"

"Yes."

She unlaced his shirt and pushed it aside to kiss his breast, then tugged lightly at the fabric.

"May I take this off?" He nodded and she did. He had no idea where the shirt ended up, preoccupied as he was with the feeling of the cool night air and the heat of the king's gaze.

Sarai's hands were on the closures of her robe.
"Viren, may I take this off?"

"No. Please... Let me..."
His hands were trembling slightly as he opened each of the fastenings. He folded the robe meticulously and got up to hand it to Harrow, who dutifully stowed it on the table.

When he rejoined Sarai on the bed she slid her arms around his neck. The warmth of her body seeped into him through her thin shift. His pants felt a bit snug, yet everything felt right and perfect. Sarai rolled them so she was on top of him, leaning most of her weight on her left side with her right leg resting lightly between his.

She touched his cheek.

"Viren may I kiss you here?"

"Yes."

His lips were next. Her voice was a whisper, forced out between lips she was nervously biting.

"Viren, may I kiss you here?"

"Yes, Please."

There was that sensation again, of memories and lives shifting and aligning as they should, at long last.

He held her shoulders as she leaned down and kissed him, so soft and gentle and sweet, and he kissed her back the same way.

She propped her head on her hand and blinked back a tear.

He said, "I hope I'm worth the wait."

"You are. Of course you are."

Then she yawned and they all did. It had gotten late. Harrow came to the bed, slightly damp from quickly rinsing off the sweat and dust of travel. He knelt on the bed beside Sarai and embraced her, folding himself around her so every inch of them that could touch did.

Then he somewhat awkwardly wiggle-crawled across their legs to the opposite side of the bed and did the same to Viren, kissing him and whispering endearments for a few moments before sinking into sleep and starting to snore. Sarai snuggled closer on Viren's other side and managed to help him get quilts over all of them before she too was claimed by sleep.

As usual, Viren found that sleep eluded him through much of the night. But wakefulness was no hardship in the affectionate if unconscious embrace of his king and queen.

As usual, Viren found that sleep eluded him through much of the night.  But wakefulness was no hardship in the affectionate if unconcious embrace of his king and queen.  He did eventually drift off, only to wake in the pre-dawn light to the familiar sound of Harrow snoring nearby.  Sarai's scent lingered, but she and her warmth were gone from the bed.  He perceived that the shape in the window alcove migh in fact be her, wrapped up in blankets.

He crept quietly to the edge of the bed, casting about for his shirt, though of course Harrow would sleep through calamities.

Sarai called from the window, "Forget it; the blanket cave is warm."

And that was true, but maneuvering into the enclosure's warmth proved challenging.  In the end, after much rearranging, Sarai handed off the blankets and wriggled forward to sit between his stretched-out left leg and the right, which  he settled for bending toward the window, curled around her.  He leaned on the wall and she leaned back against him, pulling the blankets around them into a cocoon of shared heat.

After a short companionable silence, Sarai started pointing out the mountains on the horizon and the passes she had marched through.  Viren responded with tales of his favorite haunts in the city and magical components collected in different parts of the wild.  Some of this was new; some was known before, but it had been years and there was never quite enough time.

Taking his cue from her last night, he leaned down closer and whispered, "May I touch you?"

She turned toward him and grinned.  "Yes, please."

He stroked his fingers through her hair and started massaging her scalp.  She leaned the side of her head against his chest, making a delighted humming sound that was almost purring.  Warm, sweet, comfortable, happiness flowed into him like magic, and he hoped this wasn't a spell that would be broken.

Without knowing he'd drifted off again, he was awakened by Harrow placing kisses on the top of his head, then the tip of his left ear.

He said, "Good morning," and smiled like the springtime sun, taking a seat on the window ledge next to Viren.  "I hope we don't have any vital responsibilities today..." He followed lips with hands, caressing Viren's temple, then running his thumb along the shell of his ear, making him shiver.

Sarai, who was no longer in Viren's arms, and much more dressed now, said, "You don't, but I want you to spar with me later.  Viren could watch."  She sat down on Harrow's lap and wrapped her arms around Viren's neck.  "I'm going to train now.  You two have fun."  She kissed him lightly on the bridge of his nose, then his chin just above the beard.  She looked down at his chest, mostly wrapped in the blanket, then placed a lingering kiss on each collarbone.  Viren suddenly felt much more awake, and aware of his heartrate.  Sarai twisted away, wiggling her butt on Harrow's lap in the process, stood up and quickly exited the bedchamber, leaving them blinking in her wake.

"She's pretty amazing, right?"  Harrow's eyes were shining.

"On that we will always agree."

"As you may be aware, I'm not partial to getting up and doing things in the early part of the day.  Would you consider accompanying me back to bed?"

"Yes, alright."  He left Sarai's blankets on the ledge and let Harrow tow him over to the bed, then crawled in to sit beside him, mostly covered with the quilts.

Harrow gazed into his eyes for a long moment before asking, "Viren, may I touch you?"

Were they both going to do this now?  It made sense with Sarai for a few reasons, but Harrow touched him all the time.  Still, he found he liked it.

"Yes."  Harrow reached out and slowly traced a finger along his collarbone, still tingling from Sarai's kiss, and down along the length of his sternum.

"Viren, may I kiss you?"

"Yes."  Viren found himself pressed back against the pillows as Harrow planted kisses on his throat, chest, and belly, in the pauses between his words.

"May I love you..."
"...with all my heart..."
"...every..."
"...single..."
"...day.."
"...we're..."
"...alive..."
"...and never..."
"...ever..."
"...ever..."
"...have to..."
"...get up early?"

Viren dissolved into laughter.  Eventually he met Harrow's sincere-but-amused eyes and answered, "I'm afraid I can't promise that."

"Well, fine.  I'm not going to love you til two hours before noon, then."

"That seems reasonable.  And accurate.  I hate waking you up.  You're like a bear that had to come out of hibernation too early.  Slow, but vicious, and dangerously unpredictable."

Harrow hit him with a pillow.
