Marcos stumbled into the castle in the pre-dawn haze, unsure that he was truly still breathing, barely daring to believe what he'd seen.
The nature of his news made it a good idea to seek out the High Mage, and of course he would be awake. Duty required reporting to his commander first, but he was shaking in terror and needed to be held.
"I've seen something!" Viren pulled him into the chamber and shut the door. Marcos hurriedly stumbled through describing his encounter with the elf. He knew he would have to repeat it and answer questions but right now he could barely speak, and his body was trembling more every moment.
Viren slipped off Marcos's cloak and guided him to a chair, then used the cloak to soak up some of the water streaming from his hair. Marcos wrapped his arms around Viren's waist, pressed his face against the mage's tunic, and started sobbing quietly. The armor pressed bruisingly against Viren's ribs and he grimaced as he put his arms around the young man's neck and gently stroked his damp hair.
