lonesparkI tend to go for love stories where the conflict is external as much as internal to the relationship.
They're stationed in different places.
One of them had to put the other one in jail.
They are too busy stopping the dark future from being born.
There's a lot of past baggage and also that one girl keeps floating up to the ceiling at inconvenient times.
He might really be a spy.
One of them supports terrorism as a means to an end they agree on.
One of them's mortal.
She just had to fly one last mission.
He blew up most of a universe.
Legitimate grievances led to world-wrecking war and weird politics.
He's a prosecutor. He's a defence attorney. Also there was that huge scandal, and the embarrassing t-shirts.
etc.
So it's very rarely just Boy Meets Boy, Girl Loses Boy, whatever. But lately I've been a bit more down with "sure there's the death threats from three directions, but the main problems in this relationship are stubborness and impulsivity." (And a fanatical devotion to King Richard?)
