Acclimating the new queen to the routines and responsibilities of crown and castle was great and worthy task shared by many. Chief among them were Lord Viren and the honored priestess Opeli. At times they were compelled to undertake this duty together, and at these times they rarely ceased arguing and sniping in a most unbecoming manner. The queen had warned them, the king had chastised them, but their behavior scarcely improved.
Queen Sarai had had enough and decided to try a bold, hands-on approach to reproving the wayward council members. She dealt with Opeli first, while Viren waited nervously.
"Your turn next, Lord Viren."
"Yes, Your Majesty." He re-entered the room cautiously, unsure what to expect.
"Instead of comporting yourself as befits your station, you've acted like a disobedient child who expects no consequences. In this case I believe the appropriate form of discipline is simple, direct, and... physical." She moved to a table and Viren noted the paddle and switch laid on it. He swallowed, hard.
Sarai gestured at the table. "You may choose how the pain will be delivered."
"I choose... your hand."
The queen responded with an expression of slight surprise, followed by an unsettling smirk.
"I believe the best results are obtained without clothing, but I won't force that."
"Whatever you think is best, my queen."
She stepped forward, took his arm, and drew him to the table.
"Please prepare yourself."
Viren removed his outer clothing, then loosened his pants and pulled them down to expose his buttocks. He bent forward, leaning his arms on the table. Sarai stood behind him, powerful and poised.
"Count. If you lose track, I'll start over."
Viren counted. He tried to keep his voice calm and steady, and nearly succeeded. Every swing of Sarai's arm ended with a solid, stinging smack. Every time his attention focused on nothing but the sensations of contact and pain. In the moments between, Viren concentrated on the purpose of the lesson.
Link transgression with pain and thus avoidance. The simple alchemy of flesh and thought was calming. Pay the price. Learn the rules. Serve well.
When she was done, Sarai stepped stepped in front of the table, took Viren by the shoulders and looked him in the eyes.
"Do you believe this correction is sufficient?"
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"Will you exhibit such unacceptable conduct again?"
"No, Your Majesty."
"You do seem sincere... If this treatment is effective, perhaps it's something the king should consider. Or is it a technique he's already using?"
"No, Your Majesty."
"I could suggest it to him. I could let him know you support its implementation. What do you think?"
Viren remained silent.
"Lord Viren, answer me."
"I... want him to know."
"You could tell him yourself."
Viren shook his head, blushing fiercely. Sarai rolled her eyes.
"Very well, I'll discuss it with him at the next opportunity. You're free to go.".
