Prince Kasef only met Lord Viren yesterday. Before that, he only knew the man by reputation.
Lord Viren wants Kasef, as the leader of Neolandia's ground troops, to deploy a specific contingent of highly-trained, elephant-mounted cavalry in a high-risk location, with or without his father's permission.
Kasef has the power to make this decision, and he can appreciate the tactical pragmatism of it. But he's tired of being treated like a puppet by his father, by the older royals, and now by this Katolian mage, whose smarmy, obsequeious-yet-arrogant manner is increasingly grating on his nerves.
Having reached no agreement at the strategy session earlier in the day, they agreed to meet privately for further discussion. Kasef thinks that was probably a mistake. The whole situation makes him uncomfortable, and Lord Viren gets under his skin. After a second and third attempt at negotiation, Kasef has run out of civil responses.
"I said no! Stop asking me the same question the same way!"
But Viren keeps talking. Kasef grabs him by the coat, shakes him, yells frustrated words that don't make sense.
"I told you to shut up, old man! Fuck off! Choke on a dick!" He shoves Viren, who stumbles backward, and turns to go. But the door is locked, he's forgotten the sequence of latches that open it, and this isn't really how he wants to leave things.
Kasef takes a deep breath, turns around, and takes a few steps back into the room.
Viren's gaze is downcast, his expression contrite. He says, softly, "There must be something I can do to convince you of my good faith and dedication?"
Kasef nods absently, and Viren drops to his knees.
"You made a suggestion, and... I admit I'm not currently in top form, but there are things one doesn't forget."
Viren's clever fingers stroke lightly over the front of the prince's pants. The door is locked. They are very much alone. And Kasef does know this man by reputation, after all.
"Yes," he says. "Convince me. Try."
