Have just seen The Dark Night Rises. Full of Thoughts. And probably spoilers.
Overall I think I didn't like it...but kind of because it didn't live up to itself? Or something. I couldn't enjoy it as dumb fun (because I found it too dark and unpleasant, and then I got really tired of the stupid whiteness of it all), and although there were suggestions of deeper themes I think they were mostly squandered, especially in the ending.
Ehhh...
Favorite New Thing Ever: Mattress Cop! He's like Galaga Guy, but with class conciousness.
Other things: Selina Kyle in the beginning of the movie. Also her housemate/girlfriend person, who is probably someone significant if I knew anything about comics?
Also, please bring me slash with Blake and his partner, poor hard-working, underserved Officer Asian Guy Dies First.
It kinda felt like the Inception team does Batman. Which...isn't bad, from my perspective, but odd.
Based on third-hand knowledge of stuff Rush Limbaugh says, and also movie content, I thought the early part of the movie had some pretty good commentary about predatory capitalism and inequality and the utter failure of noblesse oblige.
The rest of the movie: NOT SO MUCH. I hate how it's like Bruce Wayne is the king of Gotham and anything everyone does has to do with him and/or Batman.
The villain mastermind reveal (probably obvious if you know the comics, so yay for not) was pretty great.
But in general, I felt like the whole thing was a slap in the face to the previous movie, where citizens really could be their own savior, or at least near enough for it to morally count.
And the mess of White Savior/Orientalism/Oppressed Brown Lady with No Name Backstory deserves its own post. I think I am reaching a point in my movie viewing and maybe my life at large that I already reached with books I read and TV I watch: I am tired of things that are of, by, and for white people. The alternatives are better and life is too short.
